The protests were triggered by the alleged gang rape of a 17-year-old girl at Aastha Kunj Park in South Delhi. According to reports, the suspects allegedly posed as police officers before committing the crime. Students have also raised concerns over the alleged gang rape and killing of a minor in Sarup Nagar, with her body reportedly found days later.
The protesters are demanding better safety measures rather than restrictions on women. Their demands include better lighting on roads, safer public transport, stronger security in parks and public spaces, and accountability for those accused of crimes against women.
Several slogans used during the protests have gone viral on social media, including a satirical slogan about men’s reliability and another calling for authorities to check boys’ intentions rather than restricting girls’ movements.
The demonstrations have also highlighted broader concerns among young women about stalking, unsafe streets, public transport and restrictions imposed on women in the name of security. Delhi University students have said women should be able to move freely without being subjected to additional restrictions.
The protests come months after another youth-led movement in Delhi, popularly known as the Cockroach Janta Party movement, gained nationwide attention over examination leaks and irregularities. The prolonged protests eventually led to the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan in July.
The latest demonstrations have once again put youth activism, women’s safety and accountability in Delhi at the centre of public debate.
