Emergency crews were called to the Silver Lake Nursing Home in Bristol at around 14:00 local time on Tuesday following reports of a gas leak. Authorities said the building had already exploded by the time responders arrived, triggering a major fire.
Fire Chief Kevin Dippolito said rescue teams pulled residents out through windows, stairwells and elevators to bring them to safety. He added that one police officer carried residents on his shoulders and ran them to waiting medical staff.
According to the BBC, several people were trapped after part of the structure collapsed, while emergency crews continued rescue operations to locate anyone still inside.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro said the exact number of injured had not yet been confirmed and that the cause of the incident was still under investigation.
Images and videos shared by local media showed flames engulfing parts of the building and visible structural damage. The incident has sparked an outpouring of concern and prayers from the local community, especially as it occurred just days before Christmas.
Local authorities and first responders have been widely praised for their rapid response and efforts to evacuate residents and secure the area.
