He claimed that within days, American and Israeli forces would secure full control of Iranian airspace, establishing what he termed uncontested skies. Once that objective is achieved, he said US and Israeli aircraft would operate continuously, targeting missile installations, disabling defence infrastructure and striking Iranian military leadership.
Hegseth said Iran would see US forces present in its skies at all times, describing the operation as an unrelenting aerial campaign that would persist until Washington decides to conclude it. He characterised the strategy as sustained bombardment from the air throughout the day.
He also announced that American forces had killed the alleged head of an Iranian unit accused of plotting to assassinate US President Donald Trump.
The defense secretary emphasised that the operation was not limited in scope, stating that US pilots had been granted broad operational authority directly from the president, with rules of engagement intended to maximise American military power.
Hegseth described the current offensive as seven times more intense than Israel’s previous June operation against Iran and said additional, larger strike waves were expected. After air superiority is secured, he indicated that heavy precision-guided munitions would be used in sustained bombardments.
Addressing concerns about weapons stockpiles amid growing tensions with China, he maintained that US reserves of stand-off missiles and Patriot air defence systems remain strong.
The conflict’s human cost has escalated rapidly. In five days of fighting since the bombardment began, more than 870 people have reportedly been killed, while Iranian state media have placed the toll above 1,000. Most casualties have occurred inside Iran, though violence has spread across the region.
Strikes have also hit Bahrain, Kuwait, United Arab Emirates and Lebanon, fuelling concerns of a broader regional escalation.
