According to the IMF’s latest annual report, India’s economic data, still based on the 2011 12 framework has been labelled outdated, fragile, and noticeably inadequate. The report underscores that such a grade is a clear signal of significant shortcomings in the nation’s available economic statistics.

The IMF notes that weaknesses in India’s data system are not merely technical flaws but actual obstacles that hinder smooth and credible economic monitoring. Experts have repeatedly criticised India’s income-based GDP calculation method, calling it inconsistent and prone to distortion.

For the second consecutive year, the global financial institution has maintained this low rating, pointing to India’s persistent data vulnerabilities. These lapses, the report suggests, continue to cast a long shadow over the reliability of the country’s national accounts.
