According to reports, the main objective of the visit is to improve relations between Washington and New Delhi following recent trade tensions, particularly over India’s continued purchase of Russian oil, which has been a key point of disagreement between the two countries.

In New Delhi, Rubio attended the inauguration of a new wing of the US Embassy, describing it as a “symbol of the United States’ commitment to bilateral relations.” He said that US-India ties remain a cornerstone of Washington’s Indo-Pacific strategy.

The US State Department stated that Rubio and Modi agreed to strengthen cooperation in trade, defence, and emerging technologies, aiming to deepen strategic and economic ties between the two countries.

Energy issues also remained a major focus of the discussions, as India faces growing energy pressures amid the Iran conflict and disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz.

Reports suggest that Rubio urged India to consider increasing oil imports from the United States and Venezuela instead of relying heavily on Russian supplies.

During the visit, Rubio also commented on ongoing negotiations related to Iran, saying that some progress has been made and that an important announcement could come in the coming days.

He reiterated US demands for Iran to ensure free passage through the Strait of Hormuz and to hand over its enriched uranium stockpiles, a condition that Tehran has already rejected.

As part of his trip, Rubio visited the tomb of Mother Teresa and the headquarters of her charitable organisation. He is also expected to travel to Agra and Jaipur.

The visit comes ahead of the Quad summit, which includes the United States, India, Japan, and Australia. The alliance is seen as a key platform aimed at countering China’s growing influence in the region.

Relations between the US and India are also being influenced by Washington’s growing engagement with Pakistan, particularly Pakistan’s mediating role in Iran-related diplomatic efforts, which has raised concerns in New Delhi.
