The group’s likely new leader, Ghassan Al Dahini, vowed that his faction will not relent until Hamas is completely dismantled.
Abu Shabab was killed during a confrontation in Rafah, southern Gaza, and Al Dahini, who was also injured in the same clash, is now emerging as the organization’s prominent successor. Following the incident, Israeli military radio reported that Al Dahini was transferred to a hospital in Ashkelon for treatment of minor wounds.
Footage released on Al Quwwat Al Sha’biyya’s social media shows Al Dahini moving among armed men in Rafah, signaling his growing influence. The former Palestinian security officer is widely regarded as a strong contender to lead the group.
In an interview with Israeli Channel 12 on Friday night, Al Dahini stated, If the Israeli army leaves Gaza, we will fight Hamas to the very last breath and will not stop until it is completely destroyed. He added that he intends to follow Abu Shabab’s path, continuing to combat all militant factions with whatever resources remain. Today, Hamas will face its true self, he asserted.
Al Dahini also described Hamas as severely weakened, claiming it no longer possesses the strength to pressure other factions in Gaza.
Local sources said Abu Shabab was killed in eastern Rafah while attempting to halt clashes during a tense confrontation on December 3, 2025. Al Quwwat Al Sha’biyya has remained active in the areas of eastern Rafah still under Israeli control, continuing its operations since the U.S. brokered ceasefire agreement on October 10.
This declaration by Al Dahini signals a potential new chapter of internal conflict in Gaza, highlighting the shifting dynamics among Palestinian factions as Israeli forces plan their eventual withdrawal.
