According to the Interfax news agency, Sergei Shoigu held a telephone conversation on Monday with Ali Larijani, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council. During the call, Shoigu expressed condolences over the loss of lives during nationwide protests and stated that any external interference in Iran’s domestic matters is unacceptable. He warned that such actions pose a serious threat to regional stability and security.

A statement issued by Russia’s Security Council said that both sides agreed to maintain close contacts, enhance mutual consultations, and coordinate their positions in the security domain. Shoigu also expressed Russia’s readiness to further expand cooperation on the basis of the strategic partnership treaty signed between Moscow and Tehran in 2025.

Meanwhile, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian accused the United States and Israel of seeking to sow chaos and disorder in Iran. Tehran has, however, maintained that communication channels with Washington remain open.

It is worth noting that the recent protests in Iran initially erupted over economic grievances but later evolved into politically charged demonstrations. The U.S.-based human rights group HRANA has reported that at least 572 people have been killed during the unrest, though these figures could not be independently verified.

Russia-Iran relations have grown significantly closer since the outbreak of the Ukraine war in 2022. Last year, the presidents of both countries signed a 20-year strategic partnership agreement aimed at strengthening cooperation in defense and several other sectors.
