Russia-Ukraine peace deal: Trump, Zelensky announce 'real progress'

Speaking after talks in Florida, both leaders expressed optimism while acknowledging that several difficult issues remain unresolved. The discussions were held at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort, where the two addressed reporters following their meeting.

Zelenskyy said negotiators were close to finalising most elements of a proposed peace framework, noting that around 90 percent of a 20-point plan had been agreed. He added that US-Ukraine security guarantees were fully settled and described them as a crucial step toward lasting peace.

He said both sides had agreed that security guarantees were a key milestone and confirmed that technical teams would continue working on the remaining issues.

Trump said the draft agreement to end the conflict was almost complete, estimating it to be about 95 percent done. He added that he believed both Ukraine and Russia wanted the war to end and that momentum toward a settlement was building.

According to Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin was also interested in seeing an end to the conflict, though he provided few details about Moscow’s position. Trump said discussions were in their final stages and could move forward quickly if outstanding disputes were resolved.

However, Trump acknowledged that one or two long-standing issues remain, particularly around territorial control and how the war would formally conclude. One of the key unresolved matters is the future of the Donbas region, which has been annexed by Russia.

Trump said the United States had proposed the creation of a free economic zone in the region if Ukraine were to withdraw its forces as part of a peace agreement, though he admitted that the idea had not yet been fully agreed upon and remained a major point of contention.

Zelenskyy said any decision regarding disputed territories must be made by the people of Ukraine. He stressed that a final peace plan would need approval from Ukraine’s parliament and the public through a referendum.

Both leaders offered limited details about the proposed agreement and did not set a clear deadline for its completion, but said talks were continuing and progress was being made.
