Saudi Arabia will be represented by Defence Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman, while Pakistan’s delegation will include Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir. Turkey’s intelligence chief, Ibrahim Kalin, is also expected to attend the talks.
Ali Bagheri Kani, deputy secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, confirmed the planned visit in comments to Iranian state television. He said the officials would hold consultations with Iran’s top security body on regional security.
The proposed meeting would mark the first high-level contact between Iran and all three members of the Mecca Pact since attacks by Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi movement against Saudi Arabia intensified.
Field Marshal Munir visited Tehran last week, where he met Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and other senior officials. Iranian media reported that Tehran had told him it would not negotiate with Washington until its demands were met.
Pakistan has played a key role in mediating between the United States and Iran. Earlier diplomatic efforts helped secure an interim peace agreement in June, but the deal quickly unravelled after fighting between the two countries resumed weeks later.
Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia intercepted another wave of missiles and drones on Sunday as fighting involving the Houthis continued.
Earlier this month, ministers from the three Mecca Pact countries held an emergency meeting in Riyadh. They agreed to ensure the rapid deployment of military forces and capabilities in Saudi Arabia.
The Houthi attacks have added to regional tensions amid the US-Israeli offensive against Iran, putting additional pressure on Saudi Arabia, a US ally.
Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan signed the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement in August. Under the agreement, an armed attack against one member is considered an attack against all three.
The agreement states that the countries will use all necessary means to address threats to one another’s territorial integrity, sovereignty and internationally recognised borders.
Turkey’s parliament began the process of ratifying the agreement last week, and the process is still underway. Pakistan approved the pact last week.
