US President Donald Trump was inside the White House at the time as he continued diplomatic engagements related to ongoing Iran-linked negotiations, officials said.
Access routes to the area were immediately cordoned off, while National Guard troops blocked entry points in downtown Washington, with journalists and civilians ordered to move away from the vicinity.
According to a US law enforcement official cited by Reuters, a suspect approached a checkpoint near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue and opened fire on officers.
The suspect was later shot and taken to George Washington Hospital, where he reportedly died from his injuries. Officials described him as an emotionally disturbed individual who had previously been subject to a stay-away order.
In a separate account, US media cited a senior administration official saying the gunman fired multiple shots near the west side of the White House before Secret Service agents returned fire. A bystander was also reportedly injured during the exchange.
The FBI said it is assisting in the investigation, with Director Kash Patel confirming federal involvement and coordination with the Secret Service.
Witnesses described scenes of panic as multiple gunshots were heard in the area, prompting people to run and seek shelter. Journalists on the North Lawn were also instructed to move inside for safety.
Authorities said the investigation is ongoing, and further details about the incident are yet to be confirmed.
