Police said the horrifying incident unfolded around 1:16 p.m. at the intersection of Moore Street and Humboldt Street. Authorities reported that the shots were fired from a moped, where one person rode in the back and opened fire.
The pair then fled but crashed into an oncoming car five blocks away, abandoning the vehicle.
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch described the shooting as gang related and confirmed that one individual believed to match the shooter’s description is in custody for an unrelated matter, while the moped driver remains at large in what she called a ‘massive manhunt’ aided by bloodhounds.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani spoke to the public with a heavy heart, saying, ‘There are no words that can mend the heartbreak this family is feeling now… No embrace wide enough to heal the hole that has been left in their lives. We cannot allow gun violence to become a background hum in our city.’
Kaori’s mother, Lianna Charles-Moore, 20, described the moment her world shattered. ‘At first, I thought it was fireworks… then I realized my baby was hit. My daughter was innocent. She didn’t deserve this. We were just going out to get a few things.’
The NYPD is urging the public to help identify the two individuals involved. Investigators continue to scour the area, collecting evidence, including a blood-stained hat left at the scene, as they piece together the events of a day that has left Brooklyn stunned.
