The move came after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney delivered a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, where he criticised powerful countries for using economic integration as a weapon and tariffs as political leverage.
In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump said the Board of Peace was withdrawing its invitation to Canada, describing the initiative as what he called the most prestigious board of leaders ever assembled.
Neither Carney’s office nor the White House immediately responded to requests for comment. Just last week, Carney’s office had said he was invited to serve on the board and intended to accept.
Carney received a standing ovation at the Davos forum after urging countries to acknowledge the decline of a rules based global order. He said Canada, which has recently signed a trade agreement with China, could demonstrate how so called middle powers might work together to avoid being targeted by American dominance.
Trump responded sharply, saying Canada survives because of the United States and suggested that Carney should be grateful for past American support. Addressing him directly, Trump said he should remember that point the next time he made such statements.
The withdrawal of Canada’s invitation came just hours after Trump formally launched the Board of Peace, which was initially proposed as a mechanism to help secure a ceasefire in Gaza.
Trump said permanent members of the board would be required to contribute one billion dollars each to help fund its work. Speaking in Switzerland, he said that once fully formed, the board would be able to act broadly in coordination with the United Nations.
The board’s creation was endorsed through a resolution of the United Nations Security Council as part of Trump’s Gaza peace plan. UN spokesperson Rolando Gomez said UN engagement with the board would be limited strictly to that framework.
Countries listed as members include Argentina, Bahrain, Morocco, Pakistan and Turkey. Other close US allies such as Britain, France and Italy have indicated they do not plan to join at this stage.
