Speaking at a memorial ceremony at the Pentagon in Washington, Trump said 2,977 people were killed in the attacks, while many more died in the weeks and years that followed.
Trump said the US continues to remember the victims and their families and remains committed to fighting terrorism. He said there was no choice but to confront terrorism and ensure the country’s security.
Recalling the attacks on the World Trade Center in New York, the Pentagon and the crash of Flight 93 in Pennsylvania, Trump said the events of September 11 changed the United States forever.
He also praised the bravery of the passengers and crew of Flight 93, which crashed near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after passengers resisted the hijackers. Trump highlighted passenger Todd Beamer, who prayed with a phone operator before saying the words Let’s roll, which later became a symbol of courage and resistance after the attacks.
Trump said the US had faced various challenges over the past 25 years but was overcoming them. He also pledged to protect the country and its people and said Iran would never be allowed to obtain a nuclear weapon.
Addressing US military personnel at the Pentagon, Trump said they were working to prevent Iran, which he described as the world’s leading sponsor of terrorism, from acquiring nuclear weapons.
Trump said that maintaining faith in the future despite the worst circumstances is itself an act of faith. He pledged that the United States would continue to protect the country, its freedoms and future generations while confronting terrorism and other challenges.
