UN Lifts Sanctions on Syrian President Ahmad Al-Shara

The United Nations Security Council has officially lifted the sanctions on Syrian President Ahmad Al-Shara. According to news reports, the resolution to remove the sanctions was introduced by the United States at the Security Council and passed with 14 votes in favor. China chose not to vote.

Under this resolution, both President Ahmad Al-Shara and Interior Minister Anas Hassan Khattab have been taken off the sanctions list that targeted ISIS and Al-Qaeda.

After the sanctions are lifted, Al-Shara’s frozen assets will be released, and the arms restrictions against him will be removed as well.

This move comes just before a scheduled meeting between Ahmad Al-Shara and U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House on November 10.
