Speaking of the striking increase in violence, the UN Office of the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported that the attacks resulting into casualties and property damage were on average eight attacks daily.
OCHA has recorded more than 9,600 of such attacks since 2006. The UN body estimated that approximately 1,500 of them had occurred this year alone, which is about 15 per cent of the total.
The West Bank, where Palestinians constitute 2.7 million people, is still an epicenter of the hopes of a Palestinian state with Israel. The fact is though that the expansion of Israeli settlements has proceeded through the governments, subdividing the territory.
The settlements are not legal in the eyes of the United Nations, the Palestinians and majority of the countries as dictated by the international law, an argument that Israel disagrees with. There are more than half a million Israeli settlers who are currently residing in the West Bank.
Also, in the West Bank, OCHA reported that on Wednesday, there were already 42 Palestinian children who had been killed by Israeli forces this year alone.
OCHA said that in 2025, one in every five Palestinians killed by the Israeli forces will be a child in the West Bank.
The mission of Israel to the United Nations was not responsive to a request to comment as such. The attacks took place even after a cease fire in Gaza that was brokered by the U.S. in October that has lightened most of the fighting and helped to restore hostages.
