During his visit, Guterres is expected to meet Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, and President Asif Ali Zardari.
According to diplomatic sources, discussions will cover Pakistan-UN cooperation, regional peace and stability, ongoing global conflicts, and other matters of mutual interest.
The ongoing tensions between the United States and Iran and diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions are also expected to be discussed. Pakistan’s diplomatic role and efforts to facilitate dialogue between the two sides are likely to come under discussion.
Guterres’ visit comes amid growing global concerns over wars and conflicts in different regions. The UN chief has repeatedly stressed the need for diplomacy, negotiations and multilateral cooperation to resolve conflicts and address their humanitarian, economic and social consequences.
During his stay, Guterres is also expected to visit the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), where he will be briefed on Pakistan’s efforts to deal with natural disasters, climate change impacts and post-disaster recovery.
He is also scheduled to visit the MOGIP headquarters, where he will receive a briefing on relevant matters.
The visit is expected to provide an opportunity to discuss Pakistan’s role in promoting global peace, its position on regional and international issues, and various areas of cooperation between Pakistan and the United Nations.
Guterres is expected to conclude his Pakistan visit on Thursday and depart for New York, diplomatic sources said.
