Pichai said more than one billion people now use the Gemini app every month, making it the 14th Google service to cross the one-billion-user mark.
The milestone also makes Gemini the second most widely used AI assistant after OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which reached one billion monthly users in June 2026.
Google launched Gemini in early 2024, meaning the AI service reached the milestone in around two and a half years.
Gemini’s rapid growth may have been helped by its integration into Google’s Android operating system, where the AI assistant is available across a wide range of smartphones.
Pichai also hinted that Google is preparing further updates for Gemini, although he did not provide details about the upcoming features.
Despite Gemini’s rapid expansion, Google continues to face strong competition in the AI market from OpenAI and Anthropic, whose AI products remain major players in the rapidly growing sector.
