According to notices circulating on Wednesday, the three campuses will conduct classes online from Thursday, September 24, until further notice.
The move comes as security measures are being strengthened in Attock, Taxila, Rawalpindi and Islamabad ahead of Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf’s planned march towards the federal capital.
Security has particularly been increased in Attock, an important route between Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab and Islamabad. Containers have reportedly been placed around major crossings, while security has been strengthened along the GT Road, motorway, Chach Interchange, Attock Bridge, Haroon Bridge and Ghazi Barotha Bridge.
Reports cited by ProPakistani said around 30,000 personnel were being deployed in Attock, while some educational institutions in Hazro had also been temporarily closed. The Punjab government has requested Rangers deployment in Rawalpindi, Attock, Jhelum and Mianwali ahead of the protest.
Meanwhile, Islamabad authorities have taken control of 24 public educational institutions to accommodate security personnel during the preparations, according to the report.
However, there was no similar general announcement on Wednesday for all universities in Islamabad and Rawalpindi to shift classes online. COMSATS University Islamabad’s public events listing, for example, continued to show an on-campus event scheduled for September 24.
The reported shift to online classes at the three campuses comes as authorities step up security measures ahead of the planned protest.
