According to Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs, evacuation advisories have been issued to more than 1.6 million people in Ibaraki, Chiba, Tokyo, Kanagawa and Shizuoka. However, the advisories issued by authorities are not mandatory.
Japan’s Meteorological Agency has issued a Level 5 emergency warning, the highest alert level, for flooding and landslides in some areas of Oshima and the Izu Islands, located south of Tokyo, due to Typhoon Dojuan.
According to the weather agency, a Level 4 alert is in effect for northern parts of the Izu Islands, Chiba, Kanagawa and Shizuoka.
Typhoon Dojuan has passed through the Izu Islands and is expected to move northeastward along the coast of Honshu over the next 24 hours.
Winds at the centre of the storm are currently reaching 130 kilometres per hour, while gusts are reaching up to 194 kilometres per hour.
Heavy and persistent rainfall is expected in the Kanto region on Monday, with some areas receiving up to 250 millimetres of rain. Landslides have already been reported due to the storm, while around 4,000 homes are without electricity.
Hundreds of flights departing from Japan have also been cancelled due to forecasts of heavy rainfall caused by the typhoon.
