The 41-year-old superstar announced the end of his remarkable 23-year international career through an emotional farewell video message on his social media account.

Referring to his iconic shirt number, Ronaldo said: “The day has come when I return the number 7 shirt of my national team.”

He added: “I never thought it belonged only to me. But for 23 years, I had the honour and responsibility of wearing it.”

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner’s decision comes following recent disagreements and a dispute with Portugal’s head coach over his playing time during the October international fixtures.

Although Ronaldo was included in the preliminary squad for November’s matches, he made the final decision to step away from the national team just one day before the announcement of the final squad.

Cristiano Ronaldo began his international career in 2003 and led Portugal to several major titles, including the 2016 UEFA European Championship and the UEFA Nations League titles in 2019 and 2025.

He retires from international football holding the world records for the most appearances and goals in men's international football, with 234 matches and 146 goals.

However, despite stepping away from international football, Ronaldo will continue his club career with Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr.
