Paredes was also fined $90,000, while his Argentina teammate Nahuel Molina was suspended for seven matches and fined $90,000.

FIFA said the sanctions were imposed after an investigation into clashes involving players and officials from Argentina and Spain following the World Cup final played at the New York New Jersey Stadium on July 19.

Thiago Almada and Pablo Martín Páez Gavira were each handed one-match suspensions and fined $30,000. Argentina team official Roberto Ayala was suspended for three matches and fined $30,000.

The Argentine Football Association (AFA) was also fined a total of $321,000 for several violations.

According to FIFA, the AFA was held responsible for allowing the sporting event to be used for conduct contrary to sporting principles, team misconduct, discriminatory chants and gestures by spectators, as well as breaches of security regulations.

Argentina has also been ordered to play its next two home matches with stadium capacity limited to 50%. However, one of the two-match sanctions has been suspended.

FIFA also ordered $100,000 of the fine to be allocated to measures aimed at combating discrimination, while another $100,000 fine has been suspended.

The disciplinary action followed a report submitted by the disciplinary and ethics prosecutor appointed to investigate the incidents surrounding the World Cup final.

FIFA said all player suspensions will apply to their respective national teams’ next matches. The parties have 10 days to request a detailed decision explaining the reasons behind the sanctions, and the decisions can also be appealed under FIFA regulations.

Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 in the World Cup 2026 final at the New York New Jersey Stadium on July 19 to claim the world title.
